The Things Google Can Do

The article Footprints in the Digital Age by Will Richardson demonstrates students of this age are sharing things on the web but not necessarily for their own learning purposes. Richardson is suggesting that the teachers of this generation should step up their game and own the new technologies, so that the teachers can guide the students to use the web effectively and to express the students’ passions. “Students have the potential to own their own learning- and we have to help them seize that potential.” This is one of the phrases that Richardson says that I think summarizes most of the article.

I agree with Richardson on most of this article because the teachers do need to keep up with us if we are willing to learn this way. This new technology now allows us to share our passions and express our feelings and share that to the world, and people with the same perspective on things can follow. I also think that Google and the web can be a dangerous thing. We can be perceived as all the wrong things if we’re not careful. My friend is already on Google but luckily it just shows a paragraph she did in English class. Internet now has a huge influence on students today. I don’t know an assignment right now that doesn’t have to deal with going on the internet. Even children are going on the Web to play games, so this kind of reliability leads to a lot of questions. Like how will the jobs change in the future?

Pencil and Paper Not Enough?

The article “With “Vizit” Elementary Students can Share Pictures…” by David Warlick talks about a new technology that will supposedly revolutionize education. The “Vizit” allow elementary school students to share pictures with the others across the room or even around the world. It also has 3G broad band. The price for this device is 279.99 plus the addition of a monthly payment. Warlick talks about this as a helpful tool to possibly help autistic kids, but overall it would be a waste of money and the kids would still end up writing and with a pencil and paper.

From my perspective I think the way teachers think they need all of this technology to make education better and interesting is ridiculous. Teachers may try to make education fun or have meaning or involvement; but truth is school is school. I don’t think peoples’ minds are going to change about learning just because there’s a piece of technology that’s involved. Students still have to learn the same material no matter what. So why does changing how you learn it matter that much? At my school all of the class rooms had Smart boards. Some teachers definitely took good use out of them, but usually it was primarily used as a projector and a white board. So why was the extra money spent to do just that? I mean it’s not like there was a dramatic change. So they could show us things and then write on the material. Whoa guys, that’s a huge revolution I’m glad we spent our money well (sarcasm).

I think we should stick to old fashion textbooks, pencil and paper. Apparently something was wrong with that so we had to make computers so it’s not so hard on us. Then again it’s probably because we’re getting so lazy to do anything anymore. Think about this; would you rather check Facebook, or go take a walk? Maybe we should go backwards in time instead of forward; and think about what our necessities in life really are.

Technology changing our brain?

The article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid” written by Nicholas Carr confronts the issue that most people including him struggle reading  deep, long articles or books. Computers and the Net have changed the way we think and how we read. Now when we try to read we can get distracted and jump to different websites and even some people have quit reading books all together.

My personal experience with this problem is similar. Even reading this 8 page article was a difficult task. I would get lost in my mind or stop and check Facebook .  Reading books has always been something that I dread; but reading articles really hasn’t been an issue until now when I’m used to reading something short and sweet and easy to understand. My friends usually don’t like to read either because of how much time it takes and the patience it requires.  It’s even a shock when you find someone that really enjoys reading and reads on their own time.

“The Net is becoming a universal medium” the article stated. My school books can now be reached online and most of my homework requires going on the Net. It is definitely convenient but this might show us that convenience is the way to get through life and take the short cuts when there’s a chance. I personally don’t want to live my life that way. I want to be able to talk about my achievements and not say I got through high school.

I feel like the Net has a huge impact on us but maybe bigger then we want it to be. It has influenced us how to read and the way we think. The internet is the reason why we can’t concentrate on deep reading. The reason we feel we have to be perfect to fit in. Maybe the reason why grades go down, or maybe the reason grades go up. The internet does have huge advantages but more than disadvantages? How many people go to the library just to read? Many are on the computer. We should rethink what’s best for the peoples’ knowledge and that might not include upgrading more and more in technology.

Mexico Defends the Flag

“Cartoon of Mexican flag draws criticism” by Rafael Romo just shows how people can over exaggerate a situation. The purpose of this cartoon was just to show how violent it is in Mexico, but the people took offence to it and think their flag should not be messed with especially by a cartoonist from a different country.


Rafael’s cartoon showed up in 850 newspapers and I think the reason is that people love a good story especially when the story is blown out of proportion. I know the violent parts of Mexico are serious and 28,000 people have died because of it. But I’m sure Rafael didn’t mean to offend any of those people by using their flag to symbolize just symbolize how violent Mexico really is. And that’s probably why it has showed up in so many places because people feed off of another person’s faults so they can be entertained. I personally think things like this are wrong but that is how the world works today, and as much as we could try people love to be entertained. Obviously it is very important to Mexico how their flag is interpreted but did they really need to make the flag a huge deal and possibly they wanted more attention its hard to tell these days.

Future Lives in the Hands of a College Professer

In the You Tube video, A Vision of Students Today shows that college student’s sign up for classes that are in huge lecture rooms, and pay for books they hardly ever use and take their laptops then never use them for classroom purposes. Mr. Wesch made this video to prove that technology can be helpful but it’s not being used for what college professors want it to be used. The teachers might say they care, but having a lot of kids to teach they have no time to get to know each one of them and some don’t even know their name. In each class there is probably on average 115, but in some there are possibly a lot more.


A vision I have for students today would have to include every student’s attention meaning laptops are used when the teacher knows what they are doing and on task. It would also include the books bought in the lessons so the student’s money goes to something useful. And overall money is well spent, meaning classes should be less expensive; because everyone deserves a good education. Most of all a good lesson should be useful to people; for example the students can use the information in the outside world and apply it to their lives.

This video definitely connects to our class because the teachers can kind of get the gist of what to teach us to be successful in life and the world. Freshman year doesn’t seem that big of a deal as far as education but if we start practicing things that can be useful to us in college like reading strategies it can really help us in the long run. The video is connected to the real world extremely because it can help lower the chances of a student dropping out and possibly help the economy. It can help the economy because if college is cheaper than the debt wouldn’t be that extreme so students could spend money on other things like houses and help the United States gets out of recession.

A Vision for Students Today made me think extremely about technology and how people think it can help us so much but students are distracted by it and it affects their learning in a good and bad way. This makes me think if it’s better not to have technology and not doing whatever is more convenient. Like big lecture rooms and have everyone buy a book. Maybe it’s better if we go by the phrase “Less is more” and see where that takes us.
